In order to keep up with the nature of free, spirited debate, I wanted to place the chat feature at the top of the homepage. This ensures people can come here and share their views on anything they wish and not have it be related to any specific discussion. Here, people can share ideas, links, and views "unmoderated" and an their own pace. To me, this makes The Elephant in the Room blog truly a place for debate.

The August 2012 Jobs Report

Here is the August 2012 employment situation report from the BLS: http://www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/empsit.pdf

Key Highlights:

- The unemployment rate fell to 8.1%. Non-farm employers added only 96,000 new jobs. 141,000 jobs were added in July. This was revised downward from 163,000 jobs created in the July report. The June jobs report was also revised downward. The original report claimed 64,000 jobs were created; the number dropped to 45,000 new jobs. For 2012, the economy has averaged about 139,000 new jobs per month. In 2011, the economy added 153,000 jobs per month.

- The number of unemployed persons fell to 12.5 million.

- The civilian labor force participation rate also dropped to 63.5% from 63.7% in July.

- The "Not in labor force" (those who have no job and have stopped looking for work) jumped 581,000 from 88,340,000 to 88,921,000.

  1. Good morning,

A quick message from a conservative blogger:

First, I want to say this is a sad day. Not one republican, and not one conservative wishes for bad employment numbers. Regardless of who is in the White House, Americans need jobs. Though today's jobs figures are an obvious hit to President Obama's push for re-election, we do not champion these numbers in any positive light. We simply believe in the message, "we can do better. Obama has had his chance, it is time to move on with someone else. Help is on the way."

In addition to these dismal jobs report data, I have a few additional conclusions I've come up with or heard someone else say:

    - According to the data shown here, there are 285 incorporated places in the US with populations > 100,000. If we are looking at total jobs created within these cities, that's approximately 337 jobs per city.

    - According to the BLS report, there were 12,794,000 unemployed people in the US in July (this does not include those who are underemployed). With 96,000 jobs being added, this means one in every 133 people looking for work found a job.

    - The civilian labor force participation rate is now at 63.5%, the lowest rate it has been since 1981.

Please share any additional thoughts you have. Thank you.

  2. This is bad news:

Manufacturing employment edged down in August (-15,000). A decline in motor vehicles and parts
(-8,000) partially offset a gain in July. Auto manufacturers laid off fewer workers for factory retooling than usual in July, and fewer workers than usual were recalled in August.

I want to say something very loudly and clearly. I am a woman, and I don't give a shit about abortion. If I can't get a job, nothing else matters.

    1. Very well said! ditto from this woman! From a woman's point of view, I found that Fluke 'woman's' (and others) claimed 'victimization' of women sickening (to say the least) and absolutely NOTHING more than a smoke screen to cover up THIS president's FAILED policies; policies that have THROTTLED OUR ECONOMY.

The entire DNC convention appeared (to me) as one big, disgusting - 'no one can do ANYTHING w/o GUBMINT' Circus with an Abortionpalloosa sideshow... and a continued bashing on Bush.

It's the ECONOMY STOOPIDS. Americans need JOBS. Throughout our history it's been PROVEN time and again - Working Americans, earning wages and paying into the tax base is the FIRST STEP to reviving our stalled economy.

  5. Gee I'm so glad CNN points out how many wonderful celebrities were at the DNC. That's so important.

368,000 people are so desperate and so downtrodden they gave up even trying. Hope and change!

Obama: 'I recognize that times have changed since I first spoke to this convention. The times have changed, and so have I.'
The president might want to check in with the first lady on this one. She told a different story during her speech Tuesday night.

"Today, after so many struggles and triumphs and moments that have tested my husband in ways I never could have imagined," Michelle Obama said, "I have seen firsthand that being president doesn't change who you are, it reveals who you are."

And then: 'So when people ask me whether being in the White House has changed my husband, I can honestly say that when it comes to his character, and his convictions, and his heart, Barack Obama is still the same man I fell in love with all those years ago.'

Hard to imagine President Obama losing any love from voters here, but he might want to compare notes with the first lady.

  7. Happy day to ya Mike
I am no numbers person but I am not blind either. I don't understand why some Americans feel they have to believe in BO and his numbers game. Its like more folks walking around doing nothing doesnt faze anyone.
Or the fact that with so many people out of work they don't know how to even think about the Loss of our Tax Base that runs a big part of our Economy,
    Government!
Folks working keeps Medicare and SS safe from ruin, I for one never gave Government permission to steal from these American future holdings for those who have paid into them.
If the Man at the top doesent know the difference between truth and lie then I wonder how I can believe anything that comes out of the Office, the Whole Admin or those Leftys who profess to Love America
Obama is like the Men that traded Beads for Land to my Ancestors. Ignorance is blamed for that at a very high cost to Natives who didn't understand the ways of the People who had come.
The Ignorance of those who cheer Obama are also Ignorant. But theirs is selfmade, they have the means,News Media & Computers where as The Indian had no one to aid them in learning about Deceit and Stealing after you give your word & signed Treaties.
So Obama does the same telling lies and fixing the numbers for the betterment of his re-election.
Sad 4 America where lies and cheats walk away while Honest Working Citizens get stuck with the bill

  8. Let me say this about Eva Longoria. She said that when she worked at Wendys she needed at tax break not the Eva longoria who is now working in Hollywood. I am sure that she is either grossly missinformed or lying about what taxes a teenage working at Wendys pay and what she pays currently in Hollywood. As a teenager at Wendys she would receive back her entire Federal Income tax she paid in. If her parents were declaring her as a dependant they would receive the current years child tax credit. Therefore, she would be paying no Federal Income Tax and her parents would be getting a deduction. That is far lower abssolute ZERO than I am sure she is currently paying in taxes as a multi-million dollar yearly Hollywood star. Now if she were a young adult working at Wendys not only would she be getting her entire Federal Income Tax back, as I assume her wages wouldn't kae pay more than her tax bracket, but since we have the earned income tax credit she would receive even more back than she actually paid. Thats why they have all those commericals at tax time for rapid refunds and all those people dancing about how much they got back. Eva take a tax class or at least don't look like a complete idiot next time you stand in front of the American public in prime time and complain about not getting a tax break at Wendy when you actually paid no Federal Income Tax.
