Open Chat... All Day, Every Day! Express Your Views, Debate, and Challenge the Views of Others!

In order to keep up with the nature of free, spirited debate, I wanted to place the chat feature at the top of the homepage. This ensures people can come here and share their views on anything they wish and not have it be related to any specific discussion. Here, people can share ideas, links, and views "unmoderated" and an their own pace. To me, this makes The Elephant in the Room blog truly a place for debate.

READER'S POST #18 - You Have Got To Be Kidding Me

By: 32slim32

From Yahoo news: Mitt Romney says Barack Obama doesn't think entrepreneurs built their businesses. The problem is that's not what the president said.”

From National Review: Obama campaign deputy manager Stephanie Cutter (of “felon” suggestion fame) is out with a new charge: Mitt Romney is lying about Barack Obama’s “you didn’t build that” line.

The new Romney TV ad, Cutter claimed, “blatantly twists” what Obama said. “Romney is not telling the truth about what the president said, and is taking the president’s words out of context,” Cutter said in a new Obama campaign web video. “Romney claims the president told entrepreneurs they didn’t build their own businesses. Actually, he didn’t say that.”

“Anyone who’s seen the President’s actual remarks knows the truth,” Cutter added. “The President said that together Americans built the free enterprise system that we all benefit from.”

Uh, excuse me, I am terribly sorry to rain on your parade, but, that is EXACTLY what he said. In fact Ms. Cutter (and Yahoo News) let’s take a look at the actual comment.

“If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help.  There was a great teacher somewhere in your life.  Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive.  Somebody invested in roads and bridges.  If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that.  Somebody else made that happen.  The Internet didn’t get invented on its own.  Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.”

The entire speech at link below. This paragraph (above) is the 14th paragraph before the end.

What’s that you say? Oh, he was talking about bridges and roads. OK, if that were the case wouldn’t he have said you didn’t build THOSE instead of you didn’t build that? Let’s not forget that this is the smartest president we have ever had in our history (supposedly).

Ms. Cutter, yes, President 0bama spoke of a teacher. Yes, he spoke of the free enterprise system. Yes, he spoke of bridges and roads. And then, YES, he said if you’ve got a business you didn’t build that, someone else made that happen. Look….it’s right there on the White House’s website. If anyone is lying or blatantly twisting what 0bama said it is you Ms. Cutter and your boss the POTUS. Like you said, “Anyone who’s seen the President’s actual remarks knows the truth.”

Here is a little tip for the 0bama camp; instead of trying to convince us that you didn’t say what you said maybe you should just say you were referring to Solyndra and that would clear all this up. Someone else did make it happen for Solyndra—the taxpayers. I don’t know which is worse, his stupid statement or the attempt to tell us that’s not what he said. Suck it up buttercup, just say you mis-spoke or screwed up; don’t sit and try to tell us what you did and didn’t say—we have the transcript.

Just for the record though Ms. Cutter and President 0bama; those teachers, bridges and roads that you speak of, where did you get the money to pay for them? Also, if those teachers, bridges and roads are what made some people successful, why can’t more people succeed? I mean, they had great teachers and utilize bridges and roads too. Why can’t they succeed?

By the way Mr. President, does the same logic that you use for business (you know we owe it to government) apply to the Aurora, CO situation? That guy had great teachers, utilized bridges and roads and was given $26,000 by the federal government to amass his $15,000 arsenal. Could we say that the government helped him too? Heck, I would say he never would have pulled that off without the support of the federal government.

  1. Good morning 32slim32 - Without looking at what was said, the actual context, subject, etc... the point that is striking the biggest chord with me is the double-speak... the double standard.

Team Obama and the left (of course the liberal media would happily publish some Obama-defensive articles) have some really big "you know whats" to complain about taking things out of context.

For example, the etch-a-sketch "gaffe" - yes I know some members of the GOP running against Romney in the primaries used this, but it was greatly propagated by the left (ahem, David Axelrod).

The "I like to fire people" comment - This was taken disgustingly out of context.

The "corporations are people" comment - Not as bad as the "I like to fire people," but definitely taken out of context.

I could go on. The point is, the left has absolutely no leg to stand on with regards to this. How does the saying go? They are the pot calling the kettle black? Or is it "what's good for the goose is good for the gander?"

Either way, whether Obama's "you didn't build that" phrase was taken out of context or not, to me, is not as important as the left's "we are mightier than thou" double standard. Just my opinion :-)

    1. Good afternoon LME. Yes the hypocrisy of the left is amusing.

The "I like to fire people" was definitely twisted and taken out of context. In fact, didn't they have to do some editing of the tape to get that? Or was there another comment they did that with? Seems like there was a Romney comment where the media cut out two or three sentences (the context) of a statement. Like they used the first sentence, left out the second and third sentence and then put the fourth sentence in the clip. Do you recall that? Hell the lying ass media does it so often it's hard to keep up with all of them.

One thing is for sure though, 0bama has no problem dishing out half truths, lies, distortions and out of context statements but when they use 0bama's own words he cries foul. Well now that I think about it, if you use 0bama's own words you are repeating half truths, lies, distortions and out of context statements.

I think if he wants to sling the mud he should put on his big boy pants and take it like a man. Or at the very least make sure his teleprompter doesn't make him say stupid things. Maybe if 0bama doesn't have any big boy pants he might possibly could borrow some from Hillary.

    2. @ Slim...'Maybe if 0bama doesn't have any big boy pants he might possibly could borrow some from Hillary.' I love it!

I saw the 'you didn't build that - somebody else made that happen' speech, when it first came out, in it's entirety... he said what he said. Furthermore, he said - out loud - what I've suspected all along. His socialist viewpoint is, and always has been, that NOTHING can/will be done without Big Brother Government 'guiding' our hands.

And IF we're successful - we MUST pay for the privilege. AND, if YOU are not successful (because you CHOOSE not to TRY as hard), don't worry - we'll just 'spread OTHER PEOPLE's success (wealth) around' to make it more 'fair.'

Now 0bama - and his cronies are in a bums' rush to take it back or worse - trying to say Romney's a liar. What's sad is that very few will actually do the research to find out the truth.

What Obama and his 'followers' don't get is this: Government CREATES nothing... it CONSUMES. ALL government goods and services are made possible and PAID FOR by We The People.

Our government has become a parasite and if not checked it WILL consume the host.

BTW, I did some research - Private sector Xerox - NOT the gov. was the driving force for the creation of the internet as we know it, today.

Private sector Ford began production of the Model T in 1908 - NINE years prior to the 1917 Federal Roads Act, at which time he ALREADY had 1.5 million cars on the existing roads... By the time it was complete - 17 million.

*I saw that Romney speech... he was excited by the private sector ingenuity and technology at some sandwich shop, where you pushed buttons to make your choices and POOF there was your sandwich.. the MSM edited most of it out and twisted what was left to make it look like he'd never seen such a thing!

    3. Ahhh yes, thank you Dara. I recall the Wah Wah Burger story now. Thanks for helping me out on that.

  2. On Tuesday night, the president’s campaign team released a new television ad where the president unequivocally dismissed the attacks from Romney.

“Those ads taking my words about small business out of context — they’re flat-out wrong,” Obama says in the commercial. “Of course Americans build their own businesses. Every day, hardworking people sacrifice to meet a payroll, create jobs and make our economy run. And what I said was that we need to stand behind them, as America always has.”

Mr. President, no sir, your words were not taken out of context. And no, you did not say "we need to stand behind them, as America always has". You lied, AGAIN. You just can't stop it can you?

Here is what you said Mr. President:

"There are a lot of wealthy, successful Americans who agree with me -- because they want to give something back. They know they didn’t -- look, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own. You didn’t get there on your own. I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something -- there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there. (Applause.)

If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together. There are some things, just like fighting fires, we don’t do on our own. I mean, imagine if everybody had their own fire service. That would be a hard way to organize fighting fires."

Now if you were "standing behind" anyone it appears to me as if you were "standing behind" public sector union members. If by "standing behind" small business owners (especially successful ones) you mean "standing behind" AND bending them over and breaking one off in them, I will agree with you on that. Could you possibly clarify for us?

It seems like to me you were throwing a bone to your supporters kind of telling them that America couldn't exist without them using their EBT cards and spending all the money the government confiscated from those that work and gave to them. They sure seemed to eat up.

Anyway, I could be wrong about that (but I doubt it), but, you sure as hell were not saying "we need to stand behind them (small business?), as America always has."

Maybe what you should do Mr. President is just say that George Bush hacked into your teleprompter and put those truly stupid comments in there. That is a lot more believable (and not to mention your style) than this crock of crap you're trying to sell now.

I will have to say your desperate attempts to try to cover up and/or spin what you said are rather amusing. It kind of paints the same picture in my head as the line from the great Charlie Daniels song Uneasy Rider, "Well I had them all out there steppin' and fetchin'Like their heads was on fire and their asses was catchin'". I still laugh every time I hear that line in that song. That's how your campaign is right now.

  3. 32slim: I think you make great points here. I also agree this wasn't taken out of context. The words, " If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen" show this. YOU DIDN'T BUILD THAT; SOMEBODY ELSE MADE THAT HAPPEN is not referring to how a country's infrastructure helps business. There is no way that's what the president meant. Thank you for writing about this.
