- China says activist Chen Guangcheng can apply to study abroad. This would allow him and his immediate family to move, but not his extended family for whom Chen worries about (CNN):

- Japan plans to shut down its last remaining nuclear reactor leaving the island nation without nuclear power for the first time since 1970 (MSNBC):

- A Taliban suicide bomber killed 20 in a Pakistani market early Friday (CBS News):
